Where To Go? Where To Go?

Every year we go to the beach with the grandparents. Our favorite beach has been Hilton Head. It's wide beaches made it a great place for little kids. The twins could play in the tide pools and we could sit in the chairs without having to panic every time a wave came in. We always stay in the same condo (1306) in Villamare on the Palmetto Dunes Plantation. It is right next to the beach access and still has a great view of the beach and the pool from the porch.

Our needs are changing a little now. We still love Hilton Head - it's our safety net but.... the girls would like bigger waves, John would like blue water, Cameron wants to take his PWD, and Grandmama, Rod and I still want to be directly on the beach so we can sit on the porch and beach watch. It's also important that nobody has to hike to the beach to take a walk or hike back to the house for a refill or a pit stop. I still like to keep tabs on those kids.

South Carolina
Georgia
  • Savannah Beach
  • Georgia, Jekyll Island - Turtle Dunes
  • Tybee Island- We checked out Tybee one year on our way home- we couldn't find anything directly on the beach. All the rentals seem to be houses so there were no pools and no chairs to rent (i.e. you had to tote your own chairs all the way out to the water and back again). The beach was very flat and very hot. They don't allow dogs. Not the beach for us.

Places we've tried...

  • 1306 Villamare, Hilton Head, South Carolina -
Beautiful condo- PERFECT location! Great view of the pool and the beach. Really helps to keep track of where everyone is. The condo is up high enough so you have privacy on the balcony but not so high you have to take the (slow) elevator. Because it's an end unit we can go down the stairs and around the corner and there's the beach walk. I counted this year- it's less than 300 steps to the beach.
problem: It's only 3 bedrooms and we're getting a point where we need 4. It also isn't set up to accomdate pets- Hilton Head only allows pets on the beach at certain hours anyway.
  • Nags Head, North Carolina -
Great house for a great price. Right on the beach, not crowded, pet friendly, plenty of space for the kids to spread out without driving the GP's crazy.
problem: Freezing water! The kids had permanently blue lips. Good thing the place had a hot tub! ( we found out later the smart people don't go to Nags Head in June without wet suits.)
  • Edisto Beach, South Carolina -
We stayed at Tuckered Out. We loved it! It was a very family beach and pet friendly. There was a great little swing under the house where you could have cocktails and watch the day end. Not many restaurants- we liked buying shrimp at the fish market and cooking at home the best. Not much nightlife- you can walk to the local ice cream place. An outdoor shower. A great porch for reading.... We actually had a turtle nest right next to the house and we did the nighttime turtle walk. It would have been great if we'd ever seen a turtle. Unlike HH, not alot of beach traffic, nobody but you and your neighbors on the beach.
problem:Not many restaurants or even grocery stores-- and no waves.
